In Memory

Stephen DeCoster

Stephen Michael DeCoster

January 18, 1947 - March 05, 2019

Steve was born in Moline, Illinois, January 18, 1947 to Julius and Mary DeCoster.  He graduated from Moline High School in 1965 with many athletic and academic honors.  He then attended the University of Illinois, Champaign graduating with a degree in architecture.  Upon Graduation he moved with his wife Rita (McCarthy) and baby daughter Kristin to Minnesota, where became a licensed architect. He worked for many prominent architectural firms and taught at Minneapolis Community College. In 1987 he married Roxanne (Baum) and in 1995 he began his own architecture and design firm, DeCoster & DeCoster, Inc.  His exceptional talent earned him many accolades and awards for his designs.  He loved his work, especially his involvement in educational facilities, and the many wonderful people he worked with along the way.

Steve enjoyed and excelled in many aspects of his life:  Home and cabin improvement projects, gardening, cooking, painting, coaching, traveling, golfing, boating, fishing, and hunting, among others. But his first love was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He shared, he celebrated, he taught, he counseled, he coached, he supported, and he deeply loved them all.

Steve is survived by his wife, Roxanne, brothers Richard DeCoster(Vicky) and John DeCoster (Ann); children, Kristin Vlasak (Dan), Elisa Holzhueter (Tim), Brian DeCoster (Crystal), Michael DeCoster (Valerie), Gretchen Baum (Coby Bracy), Heidi May, and 19 grandchildren.

Steve will be remembered as an intelligent, witty, charming, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  He lived life to the fullest and was loved by so many.

While we hadn't seen Steve in many years, he and Rita were fun and helpful when we moved to Minnesota forty some years ago. Rest In Peace dear Steve. Prayers of comfort to his family. Linda and Dale.

Ralph summed it up pretty well.  Steve and I had a lot of fun at MHS...many memories not forgotten.  Rest in peace, my friend.

While Steve and I were never best friends we were close enough for me to have always enjoyed that sh--eating grin he always had. I loved that smile and sense of humor. God bless him and his family. We are losing so many of our group recently. Let's all agree to make hay while the sun shines.
