I have fond memories of Dave Martel. He was always a fun and crazy guy. As young marrieds we had kids at Willard Elementary School. For Christmas parents were traditionally given hand prints of their kindergarteners BUT Mrs Taflinger felt she couldn't manage that and the kids made pencil holders. Soon after Christmas Dave came to class with his pencil holder in his hand [and a twinkle in his eye]. He held it out to Mrs T. and said,    "I have been waiting 5 years for Deanna's hand print and what did I get?...a white rock," I was her room mother and I, too, really wanted one to match Little David's so I managed to set aside enough clay to make my Joey a handprint. She soon reconsidered the handprints and everyone got handprints of their darling 5 year olds, after all. My boys both had Marilyn Gibbs for 1st grade and David had Sharon Amundson [1964] for 2nd grade before we left Moline for construction jobs all over the country. They had a great start for their school days and I ALWAYS think of Dave Martel when I glance over at the gold/white handprints.

My sympathy to the Martel family. You likely have many many good memories.
