In Memory

Candace Ann Johnson (Spiegel)

It is with great sorrow that we inform our friends and family that Candace Ann Spiegel died following a short illness on September 24th.

Candace was born on November 24th, 1947 in Moline, IL. She is survived by Joel, her husband and best friend of 31 years, her daughter Sergeant First Class Megan Curtis (Army), step-children Michele Sperling (Eric) and Marc Spiegel, and her step-granddaughters Alexi and Gabriela Sperling.

Candace was a member of the U.S. Lighthouse Society. She loved visiting and climbing lighthouses (with Joel's help) and, of course, collecting replicas of them. Her greatest passions were cross-stitch and needlepoint. She enjoyed square dancing, tap, hip hop, and slide dancing and spending time with all the new friends she made over the past 16 years in Sun City.

A memorial service for Candace was held Wednesday, October 1st at 1:00pm at Saul's Funeral Home in Bluffton, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to do so make a donation in the name of Candace A. Spiegel to Hospice of the Low Country, P.O. Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910 or Julie's Mission, 93 Cutter Circle, Bluffton, SC 29909.

Candace was a friend in grade school - we lived just a few blocks from each other and played together a lot. I've thought of her often lately. I had no idea she had died. I'm so sorry. She was sweet and fun as a child, and I send condolences to her family. Very sad to read this news.

Candy and I were next door neighbors in the early/mid-50's.  I still remember our lunches with Mrs. Colvin (the widow who lived across the street from us and was sort of a surrogate grandmother to us) where she served us chicken noodle soup...with green olives!  I missed her as a playmate when her family moved.  While we made new friends and went our separate ways after she moved, I felt a new sense of loss when I joined the reunion site and found out she had died.  Miss you again Candy.
